106: Did anyone get rich from Beanie Babies?
Wednesday Apr 03, 2024
Wednesday Apr 03, 2024
The bean-filled animals took auction websites by storm and caused mass hysteria among collectors. Theft, divorce and bankruptcy clouded the 90s craze that was originally intended to be a children's toy, which quickly spiralled into adults racing to buy rare Beanie Babies that would allegedly make them rich.
I talk about how Beanie Babies came to be and why so many people believed they were a great investment. I'll cover where they are now and those who sunk their entire life savings into buying thousands of the toys, hoping that the investment would one day pay for their children's college education.
Did anybody get rich from Beanie Babies?

105: Were Furbies a risk to national security?
Wednesday Mar 27, 2024
Wednesday Mar 27, 2024
Furbys or Furbies? Tiger Electronics says both are correct. However you want to spell the plural of these robotic pet friends, they are the topic of this week's episode.
The first mass-produced robot would wake children in the night, screaming its made-up language and making fart noises... It was also allegedly deemed a risk to national security by several intelligence agencies. People claimed to have taught their Furby how to talk, but could it learn from its owner?
In this episode, we talk about the invention of a robotic pet that resembles a Chinese demon who is said to cause harm to humans.

Wednesday Mar 20, 2024
Wednesday Mar 20, 2024
Tamagotchis were the 90s toy that was most millennials' first pet. The invention changed the way we thought about gaming and paved the way for a system that remained on, living in a continual cyber environment that couldn't be paused or turned off.
People would become extremely attached to these toys, which led to some very strange goings on in a cemetery in Cornwall...

102: POGs and TAZOs
Wednesday Mar 06, 2024
Wednesday Mar 06, 2024
POGS were the small, collectable discs that gave most millennials their first experience of gambling. Those who collected POGS contributed to the nationwide ban, which stopped kids from playing the slamming and flipping game whilst at school.
Millions of children across the globe traded POGS with their friends and won them in battles.
TAZOS were the alternatives that were given out in packs of potato chips, and both were covered in colourful graphics and pop culture images.
In this episode, find out where POGS and TAZOS came from and the rise and fall of the currency of the kids in the 1990s.

A light-hearted and informative podcast looking at your favourite toys and games from the 1990s and 2000s.
If you played with POGs or TAZOs, put tag protectors on your Beanie Babies, collected Pokémon cards or tried to teach your Furby to swear - this is the podcast for you.
Subscribe so you don't miss episode #1
The Golden Age of Toys
The 1990s saw a change in the way we played with toys. From the rise of electronic gaming systems to robotic and digital pets - this decade saw some big steps in technology.
We also played with things that weren't powered by electricity, such as Super Soaker and ballbearing yo-yos. We also had collectables like POGs and Pokémon cards.
Some fads were short-lived and only lasted a few years, while others stayed popular into the 2000s.
This show will cover all of your favourite toys, games and collectables from the golden age of toys. Find your new favourite show on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts.
How to find Missingno.
In the North of Viridian City, there is an old man who teaches you how to catch wild Pokémon. Talk to him and let him do his little demonstration, then immediately fly to Cinnabar island. Once there, head to the east coast of the island and surf up and down on the sandy beach area, where the sea is touching the land. You’ll encounter some weirdly high-level Pokémon, until BAM! You’ll meet a pixelated mess - it’s MissingNo.
Episode #1: Pokémon
If you were a kid in the 1990s, you had a big decision to make... Bulbasaur, Squirtle or Charmander?
Listening to this week's episode will take you back to playing the games, watching the TV show and collecting the trading cards!
